Welcome to a special edition of the weekly Dayton Mini Maker Faire blog.  This week we’ll be doing not one, but THREE blog posts about some young makers in our community.

Last year, the organizers of the BuildIt Challenge gave a presentation at the Dayton Mini Maker Faire about this STEM program in Waynesville and Xenia, Ohio.  From the BuildIt Challenge website:

Students create original arcade style games and other things from cardboard and recycled materials. They bring these creations to the school or church for a special event where they share their projects and ideas with each other. Volunteer reviewers from the community talk to students about their projects, and encourage our next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

Through participating in the Buildit Challenge, students learn math, engineering and other STEM related concepts, writing, design thinking, creative problem solving, sustainability, social entrepreneurship and more.

The Buildit challenge is free and open to grades K-12, we are expecting about 150 project entries this year at Waynesville, and about 50 project entries at the new Buildit Challenge in Xenia. Through participating in the Buildit Challenge, students learn math, engineering and other STEM related concepts, design thinking, creative problem solving, sustainability, social entrepreneurship and more.

This year, two of our Dayton Mini Maker Faire organizers are going to be serving as judges at the BuildIt Challenge this Wednesday and Thursday.  We are also providing the winners with a family 4-pack of tickets to this year’s Dayton Mini Maker Faire!  (And rumor has it we may see some of the top ranking projects at this year’s Maker Faire too!)

Tomorrow, we will be reporting to you about the Waynesville event, and on Thursday we’ll do some coverage of the Xenia event.

  • It was STEM at play! My favorite part was listening to the back stories behind the projects. We’re all born to be story tellers, and young people are able to channel that into their work with ease. The Buildit Challenge tonight was refreshing. I’m looking forward to tomorrow!
Thank you for encouraging the next generation.
